Council approves zoning changes allow for the sale and delivery of adult-use cannabis
#californiacannabis – “In Tuesday’s meeting Council approved changes to the city’s zoning code to allow for expanded retail cannabis sales, finally acknowledging the opportunity it presents to assist in the city’s economic recovery.
In the seven hour long meeting that was dominated by a number of undiscussed items brought over from last week, this particular item took 90 minutes incorporating some extensive and on occasion extraneous conversation. However, the decision was a unanimous one.
The first cannabis dispensary opened in the city of Santa Monica back in June, more than a year and a half after the permit was granted in October 2021, six years after the application was requested in December 2017 and over 26 years since medical marijuana was made legal in the state of California. Per the Santa Monica municipal code, only two dispensaries are allowed in the city and they are limited to medical use only, which means that customers will be required to have a doctor’s recommendation to purchase products.
This item hasn’t been discussed in front of City Council since the June 13 meeting when Ajay Kolluri, HdL’s Director of Cannabis Services (a municipal consulting firm that provides guidance on cannabis business regulation) said, “Santa Monica residents therefore can, and most certainly do, cross city limits to purchase adult-use cannabis from LA based businesses.””

Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Inside Totally Different Plant
#cannabisresearch – “Scientists have discovered cannabidiol, a compound in cannabis known as CBD, in a common Brazilian plant, opening potential new avenues to produce the increasingly popular substance.
The team found CBD in the fruits and flowers of a plant known as Trema micrantha blume, a shrub which grows across much of the South American country and is often considered a weed, molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro told AFP in June.
CBD, increasingly used by some to treat conditions including epilepsy, chronic pain and anxiety, is one of the main active compounds in cannabis, along with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC – the substance that makes users feel high.
The compound’s effectiveness as a medical treatment is still under research.
Leafly Suit Against NY Pot Regulators Back In State Court
#cannabislawsuit – “A New York federal judge on Wednesday kicked cannabis marketing company Leafly’s challenge of the state’s new advertising rules back to state court, after regulators had attempted to move the matter away from a state judge who has issued unfavorable rulings against them.
In a minute order Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Anne M. Nardacci said the case did not meet any of the criteria for removing the matter to federal court. Specifically, it did not allege diversity of citizenship, allege claims under federal law or invoke a sufficient amount of money in controversy.
“Accordingly, the court declines to exercise supplemental jurisdiction and remands this action to the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Albany County, for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction,” the minute order said.
Leafly had filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order Tuesday, saying the new regulations challenged in the lawsuit would handicap the industry and violate the petitioners’ rights to free speech. The emergency filing came after state officials maneuvered the matter into federal court on Oct. 11….”
What do magic mushrooms do to your brain? A midflight crisis raises questions.
#psychedelics – “The pilot claimed to have taken mushrooms about two days before the flight.
Psilocybin tends to enter the brain quickly and if it is ingested orally, the effects peak about 60 to 90 minutes after taking it, experts said. Most of the time, experts say the active effects of psilocybin last about four to eight hours, and the drug is completely gone from your body after 24 hours. “We haven’t had evidence of anyone having a prolonged reaction to psilocybin,” Barrett said, referring to the acute effects of the drug….”
